The farmers in Ungheni district are able to keep their harvests of fruit, vegetables and grapes in a refrigerated room in Cornesti town. The room was built by and for members of the cooperative “Legumicolacom” in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). ” This project aims to modernize the agricultural sector in Moldova. The members of the cooperative purchased the plot on which the refrigerated room was built. The cooperative “Legumicolacom” has only seven founding members, but any farmer can keep their products in the store. They can themselves choose the preservation conditions, temperature and water sprinkling method. The sum that they pay for renting the area depends on this,” coordinator of the project and the cooperative’s jurist Andrei Zapanovici said during a fact-finding visit for the press organized by the German Embassy in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the cooperative’s head Vladislav Glodeanu, the storage capacity of the refrigerated room is over 150 tonnes. “The grapes for example now cost 15 lei a kilogram, but in December they will cost 30 lei. Thus, many producers prefer to store the harvest and sell it in winter, when the products grow dearer. We built two sections in the refrigerated room. One of them is intended for grapes,” said Glodeanu. A sum of 1.5 million lei was used to buy the land and build the refrigerated room. Almost 700,000 lei was needed to prepare the necessary documents. “It is difficult to implement a project in Moldova owing to bureaucracy. It took a long time to get all the documents needed,” stated Vladislav Glodeanu. The cooperative also benefited from 15,000 lei in assistance from the German Agency for International Cooperation for purchasing planting material and equipment for watering plants in greenhouses. According to the organizers of the visit, many of those who until now cultivated only vegetables decided to plant orchards. During several years, until the trees start to produce fruit, they will continue to grow vegetables so as to have a source of livelihood.
