UNFPA implements in Moldova first five-year Country Programme

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) starts to implement in Moldova the first Country Programme for a five-year period (2007-2011). This will initially cost USD 2.25 mln. The Programme’s aim is to provide assistance to Moldova in the process of European integration, in implementing the development priorities set by the Government, satisfying the needs of the underprivileged people within three primary assistance domains: promote human rights and good government; reduce regional and local gaps, and to ensure the access to qualitative services. The Action Plan for implementation of the Programme of Assistance and Cooperation between Moldova’s Government and UNFPA was signed on Tuesday, January 30, by the first deputy prime minister Zinaida Greceanyi and UNFPA Country Director Peer Sieben. Greceanyi highly appreciated the activity of the United Nations Population Fund in Moldova, mentioning its significant contribution to the creation of the quality services for teenagers and youth, inauguration of several model-clinics providing reproductive health-related services, development of professional experience of national specialists in education and health. The Programme was elaborated as a result of the cooperation of government institutions with foreign development partners – the United Nations system and other donors under UN Development Assistance Framework. A UNFPA mission is paying a visit to Moldova from January 29 to February 2 to participate in the final meeting on assessing the progress of the portfolio of projects implemented in concert with Moldova’s Government in 2004-2006. Concurrently, the mission will hold technical consultations with implementation partners in Moldova, take part in the opening of a modern facility dealing with reproductive health at the National Medicine College in Chisinau, equipped with the support of the UNFPA.
