Ukraine has agreed to increase the reservoir discharges at the Novodnestrovsk dam to relieve the situation of the Moldovan municipalities situated downstream, in particular the capital Chisinau, and which rely on the Nistru River for drinking water, IPN reports.

The agreement was reached at a meeting in Kiev last week with the participation of representatives from the Moldovan Agency for Water Resources.

The discharge will be increase to 130-140 cubic meters per second, the Moldovan Ministry of Environment said in a press release.

Earlier this month, Chisinau’s water utility ACC warned that water levels on the Nistru River had critically dropped to 8.4m, imperiling tap water supply. Environment Minister Valeriu Munteanu however said the capital city was in no danger of running out of water, as there were enough reserves in both the Dubasari and the Novodnestrovsk dam reservoirs.
