Rohovei Paun will serve as the new ambassador of Ukraine to Moldova. The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed the appointment decree on Friday, February 7, IPN reports.

Rohovei Paun previously held the position of ambassador-at-large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. He was responsible for maintaining contact with the Transnistrian region, but strictly in coordination with Chisinau, said former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

The appointment of Rohovei Paun is an unexpected change of decision, noted the newspaper European Pravda. In March 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Oleksii Danylov, former secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, would become Ukraine’s ambassador to Moldova. Zelenskyy said he had approved this candidacy. However, the presidential decree dated February 7 indicates that this did not happen.

The position of Ukraine's ambassador to the Republic of Moldova became vacant in March 2024, when Volodymyr Zelensky relieved Mark Shevchenko of his duties. He had held the position since 2020 and was preceded by Ivan Hnatyshyn, appointed in 2015. Hnatyshyn was dismissed by former President Petro Poroshenko in April 2019, and for half a year Ukraine had not had an ambassador in Chisinau.
