The state department for veterinary medicine of Ukraine forbidden temporary meat and sausages import from Moldova, Poland and Belarus, according to Ukrainian press reports.
According to them, these measures are related to multiple delivery cases legate of meat goods without appropriate veterinary documents.
„the borders for these countries will be open only when there are undertaken necessary measures that meat imports do not present any danger for Ukrainian consumers”, according to the letter signed by the vice-chairman of the state department for veterinary medicine of Ukraine, Nikolai Patiuk, sent to main veterinaries of mentioned countries.
Asked to comment the situation, press officer of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, Veniamin Balan, said that he has hear about these interdictions of the press reports, and the ministry was not informed officially about this and could not make any comments in this sense.
Same interdictions were set by Russia, in April 2005. The decision of Moscow to stop meat imports of Moldova was taken when it was noted that imports "are higher than the Moldovan internal production ". Russian officials supposed, “Moldova could be a branch used for meat re-export, which partly could be infected".
According to data of the National Bureau of Statistic, the meat export volume in Ukraine was 263 tones in 2005, their cots being 235,000 dollars.
