Russian lieutenant general Alexandr Lentsov, who is known for his intervention in armed conflicts, including in Chechnya and Syria, is to carry out an inspection at the peacekeeping forces in Moldova’s Transnistrian region. According to the Ukrainian information portal dsnews.ua, Alexandr Lentsov is a mercenary and his visit will bring nothing good to Moldova or to Ukraine, which will thus receive a ‘knife in the back’ from Russia through the agency of Moldova, IPN reports.

The author of the opinion article Taras Hortita says the appearance of this military man in Moldova can mean only that Russian does not renounce its decision to destabilize the situation in Ukraine. Moscow profits from the tense situation in Moldova and is trying to open here the second front against Ukraine and against Europe too.

According to Taras Hortita, Lentsov’s visit to the Transnistrian region can also have the goal of determining the state of the Russian military and resources there and to see how prepared these are for a hybrid aggression by the scenario used in Crimea in the case of the elections in Moldova.

Taras Hortita notes that the regional situation is worsening and Ukraine should not overlook Transnistria. If Moscow manages to profit from the crisis in Moldova, Ukraine can lose an important ally on the southwestern border.
