The UK Embassy in Chisinau recently celebrated the official opening of its 10th English Language Centre (ELC) at the Tiraspol Pedagogical University “T. Sevcenko”.
According to a press release of the Embassy, this event concludes a yearlong project aimed at strengthening the capacity of Moldovan higher-education institutions in English Language learning and teaching. The opening of the Centre in Tiraspol was preceded by a sister-Centre at Soroca Pedagogical College “A. Mateevici”.
“It is a great honour for me, in my first two weeks in Moldova, to launch the tenth English Language Centre in the country. Nowadays, English is the language of the Internet, finance and trade and a good command of this useful tool undoubtedly opens new horizons and opportunities for many young and talented students”, underlined the British Deputy Head of Mission in Chisinau, John Mitchell.
English Language Centres are envisaged to act as important resources in the learning and teaching of English language. In addition to this, the Centres offer access to general information about the United Kingdom, the land’s traditions, history and values. The donation, which enabled the set-up of the ten Centres, includes computers, TV and DVD sets, CD-players and other equipment. In addition to, a large number of books and manuals to facilitate the learning process and encourage an interest in the learning of English language and literature.
The ELC Project was launched by the British Embassy in 2005 with the overall objective to improve knowledge of English language and literature, UK culture and society among Moldovan University students and professors. As part of this project a total of ten Centres were set up within the premises of five major Universities in Chisinau and academic institutions in Cahul, Comrat, Balti, Tiraspol and Soroca.
