Michel Platini, who runs for the chairmanship of FIFA, announced the UEFA’s and FIFA’s intention to contribute to the reconstruction of the Republican Stadium. This statement was made at a press conference, held on August 2, in the Moldovan Football Federation’s (FMF) headquarters. Platini’s visit aims at assessing the effectiveness of managing the funds offered by FIFA to FMF in the framework of the “Goal” project. The donation was provided for building the Vadul-lui-Voda-based technical camp of FMF. The Republican Stadium is due to be demolished during the next 2 years and rebuilt again. The reconstructed venue will have 20 thousand seats, FMF chairman Pavel Ciobanu states. The project doesn’t require any financial aid from the Moldovan authorities, excepting moral support, Mr. Ciobanu says. Michel Platini is the member of FIFA and UEFA Executive Committees, vice-chairman of the French Football Federation’s (FFF). Mr. Platini runs for the chairmanship of FIFA on behalf of FFF. The current chairman, Lennart Johansson, 76, who holds this office since 1990, is, for the moment, his single challenger in the elections, scheduled for January 2007.
