Officers of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC), in cooperation with the security service of a bank, arrested two Romanian citizens aged 25 and 30, who are suspected of identity theft. The young men form part of a crossborder group operating in the EU, the Center says in a communiqué, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The two men have been followed for a period. They installed special equipment for scanning the information from the magnetic tape of ATM cards. The information was to be used to clone cards to withdraw money. One of the men was arrested in the evening of April 13, when he was uninstalling the equipment. During two days, they copied information from 90 cards. Similar equipment was found at another ATM of the same bank in Chisinau. The second person was arrested the same day at the house rented by the two. The two men are liable to up to five years in jail. They both have a criminal record. Earlier, they were convicted of different offenses in Romania and Italy. They were placed under arrest for 72 hours.
