A newborn diagnosed with interrupted aortic arch and another one with mediastinal tumor, which are rare diseases in Moldova, were operated by specialists of the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Mosneaga”. The operations were performed successfully and the children were transferred to the Mother and Child Institute, IPN reports.

In a press release, the National Clinical Hospital said the surgeries were difficult. These were performed by cardiac surgeons Oleg Repin, Liviu Maniuc, Eduard Cheptanaru and Nicolae Shchuka. “In such cases, if the children are not operated during the first days of life, the consequences can be fatal,” said the head of the Children’s Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Section Vera Dogotari.

The girl with interrupted aortic arch was operated on the eighth day of life. “Fortunately, the operation was successful. The post-surgery recovery period was difficult, but with positive results. An artificial heart was used in the operation for an hour, with circulatory arrest. So, the child’s heart didn’t beat for an hour. The malformation was fully removed,” stated Vera Dogotari.

The second child was operated on the second day of life. According to surgeon Liviu Maniuc, the boy had a mediastinal tumor that compressed the heart and caused cardiac insufficiency that involved the aorta. The tumor was removed. The recovery period lasted for over three weeks and was also difficult.
