The mayor’s offices of Dubasarii Vechi village of Criuleni district and of Ceadir-Lunga town of ATU Gagauzia signed the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, pledging to achieve the European Covenant’s objectives to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2020 and to increase local resistance to climate change, IPN reports.
According to national expert of the Covenant of Mayors Victor Parlicov, after signing the agreement the mayor’s offices are to make a reference inventory of emissions and to assess the risks and vulnerabilities related to climate change. During two years, the municipalities are to adopt a local plan of action on sustainable energy and climate and other relevant planning documents. These must be ratified by a resolution or a decision of the local Council. This will enable to guarantee long-term political support.
The signatories undertake to make public the plan on the online profile of signatories published on the website of the Covenant of Mayors. This guarantees the transparency, legitimacy and comparability of the local climate-related measures taken by these. “The municipalities that become a party to the Covenant of Mayors can count on the assistance of the national support bodies,” stated Victor Parlicov.
The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy was launched by the European Commission on October 15, 2015. This now brings together over 7 600 local and regional authorities from 57 countries. In the Republic of Moldova, there are 19 active signatories.
