Two trains running on the routes Chisinau-Ungheni-Chisinau and Ungheni-Balti-Slobozia-Ungheni will stop working on January 18. The director of Moldova’s Railways Iurie Topala has told IPN that the two routes will be annulled because of lack of passengers.

Thus, the Ungheni-Chisinau train that sets out from the terminus at 3:43am and the Balti-Slobozia-Ungheni train that starts at 4:39am will no longer run. “According to our statistics, few passengers travelled by these trains - about 20-30 people,” stated Iurie Topala.

According to him, in 2014 Moldova’s Railways sustained losses of 180 million lei and the company’s administration decided to economize. “The people travelling on these routes will not be affected as other trains continue to run on them. We removed the night routes in order to save money,” said the director.

A month ago, the Chisinau-Ocnita train route was also annulled owing to the absence of passengers on the Balti-Ocnita portion.
