Two friends drown while trying to rescue each other

Two friends drowned Thursday in a lake near Tiganesti village of Straseni district after observing the Transfiguration of Jesus. Emergencies Service spokeswoman Liliana Puscasu has told Info-Prim Neo that the two men, aged 37 and 40, were from Onesti village. They went to swim and celebrate the feast. Eyewitnesses said that after drinking alcohol, one of them went into the water, but he did not know to swim and started to drown. His friend rushed to help him, but they both went underwater and did not come out. Frogmen took their bodies out in several hours. A man aged 45 drowned in a pond in Cuhnesti village of Glodeni district on Wednesday. A hay shed caught fire at the Condrita monastery. Three firefighting vehicles went to the scene, but the fire destroyed most of the shed. A Ford-Tranzit minibus started to burn while moving along a road in Rezina district. The fire seriously damaged the vehicle. Both of the cases are being investigated. A number of 167 persons have drowned in Moldova’s waters since the start of this year. The victims included mainly men of working age.
