Two ex-policemen from Calarasi district were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for misuse of power, IPN reports, quoting the Prosecutor General’s Office.
According to the prosecutors, in 2001 an inspector of the Calarasi criminal police division and another one of the Causeni public order division, suspecting a person from Nisporeni of committing a burglary in Calarasi, went to the suspect’s home and carried out a search illegally. Afterward, without having a relevant order, the policemen forced the suspect onto a minibus in order to take him to the Calarasi Police Inspectorate. On the way, they stopped in a forest in order to force the suspect to make self-incriminatory statements. The police officers beat him with a peace of wood and a pipe and removed one of his toe nails with a pair of pliers.
In 2012, the Calarasi Court stopped the examination of the case because the prosecutors violated particular rights of the offenders. But the prosecutors challenged the decision and the Chisinau Appeals Court sentenced the offenders to five years behind bars and banned them from working at the Ministry of the Interior for a period of five years. The culprits were also obliged to pay 50,000 lei damages to the injured party.
The decision can be appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice.
