Two decades since Chernobyl disaster

In the last 5-6 years, the state pays a special attention to those who have suffered 20 years ago as a result of the atomic-nuclear disaster, the chairman of the „Chernobyl” Association, Ion Capatina, stated about this in the Piata Marii Adunari Nationale (The Great National Meeting Square). He mentioned about the adoption of many legislative and normative acts that provide additional rights in the field of medical insurance and social protection, as well as financial assistance provided on their basis.
According to him, „Chernobyl” invalids benefit of a monthly allowance of 300 lei, and with the occasion of this anniversary they got another small one of 800 lei.
With the occasion of marking 20 years since the nuclear accident from Chernobyl, in Chisinau, took place a commemorative march that included the participants at the catastrophe’s consequences liquidation, which started in the Piata Marii Adunari Nationale and ended with a meeting near the future monument on the Trandafirilor street from Chisinau.
The village population of the region commemorates today the most serious nuclear accident in the history, disaster of Chernobyl. At 1.23a.m., when the reactor nr. 4 exploded and started the already known hell, the families of those who have died in the first hours of the catastrophe or along these years, light on thousands of candles.
On April 25, 1986 the 4th reactor of the nuclear plant was stopped for an ordinary control and at 1.23a.m., on 26 April, an explosion burst, than the second. The reactor was damaged, and its content generated a big fire, extinguished in 10 days. Radioactive smoke got up as a volcano eruption up to 1 kilometer high. The specialists say that for a period of 9 days, the reactor continued to give out radiations 400-fold more than the atomic bomb launched on Hiroshima. Meanwhile, the information was kept in secret, and in order to keep it quiet it was said that nothing happened, and the western press reports were lying about those 2,000 victims of the explosion. Kiev inhabitants, as well as those from the affected localities participated in the demonstration of 1 May. At the same time, the experts of the world tried to explain what could be the disastrous results a person might have.
According to specialists, at the moment, the sarcophagus of the reactor needs interventions. In order to stop radiation, the reactor has to be covered with a steel bucket of 20.000 tones. The work costs are estimated to 750 million euros.
