More than 120 houses in the northern town of Donduseni lost their roofs to high winds and hail on Tuesday afternoon, with some houses also losing their ceilings. The storm affected over 300 hectares of crops in the same town.

Donduseni mayor Ion Zloi told IPN that the affected people received slate in order to repair their roofs. The situation is worse in the case of at least four houses where the ceiling collapsed and the rain flowed inside. The situation is disastrous, says the mayor. “People worked their entire lives and now they are just staring at the damaged houses and think of what is there to do.” Some people are lucky to have outbuildings near the main houses where they have been able to shelter.

The mayor also said that hail wreaked havoc on fields of corn, wheat, canola and beet, with over 300 hectares affected. The land belongs to various economic operators, and the worst thing is that basically all the affected plots had been re-sown after being flooded by heavy rainfall a month ago. The mayor says that the intervention of the central authorities is required.

Donduseni deputy district head Viorel Rusu told IPN that the storm also ripped off roofs from 5 apartment buildings and 20 houses in Rediul Mare village. Trees fell on certain stretches of road, but they have already been removed and traffic has been restored. Several power lines were downed causing outages, but the situation has been remedied.

Emergencies Inspectorate spokesperson Daria Neceaeva said that as of 7:00 a.m, ten villages in the districts of Glodeni, Straseni, Râşcani, Călăraşi, Criuleni, and Nisporeni  struggled with partial outages. Hail also affected crops in the village of Rotunda, Edinet district, as well as in Briceni’s Cotiujeni, Larga, and Medveja.

Disaster assessment teams are out evaluating the damages.
