The incidence of tuberculosis in the Republic of Moldova has reduced compared to last year. Silviu Sofronie, director of the Chisinau-based Lung Institute “Chiril Draganiuc”, has told Info-Prim Neo that, compared with 2007, the situation relatively improved, as all the figures describing the epidemetric situation slightly decreased. Silviu Sofronie informed that more than 6 thousand persons infected by tuberculosis are currently registered in Moldova. The disease affects all categories of population. The incidence in adults is 128 infected per 100,000 of population, while in young people under 18 – 32 infected per 100,000 inhabitants. To reduce the incidence of tuberculosis, activities of raising medical and hygiene awareness for the prophylaxis of tuberculosis are taking place in almost all the regions of Moldova, including the Transnistrian region. The week-long campaign for promoting medical and hygiene awareness for the prophylaxis of tuberculosis will end on March 24.
