The driver who tried to bring over €1.5 million into Moldova through the Leușeni customs post was remanded in custody for 30 days, IPN reports.
The decision was taken by the Chisinau City Appeals Court after the prosecutors appealed the decision to place him under house arrest made by the Ciocana branch of the Chisinau City Court.
The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said the banknotes turned out to be genuine. The exact sum is €1 570 735. At the request of prosecutors, the banknotes were confiscated.
The prosecutors also requested to confiscate the TIR truck where the money was found. The court hasn’t yet pronounced on this request.
The attempt to smuggle contraband carries a penalty of three to ten years in jail.
