Almost 600 old trees in central Chisinau will be cut down, while another 800 will be pruned. New trees will be planted instead of the felled ones, mainly poplars, American maples, lime trees, acacias and plane trees, IPN reports.
Galina Leahu, vice director of the Green Areas Association, told a news conference that experts examined the state of each tree that is to be felled. They also took into account the numerous requests made by people. “Unfortunately, we are very late as regards sanitary felling and pruning. We are at least ten years or even 20 years late in ensuring artificial trimming and crown formation,” stated Galina Leahu.
The costs for renewing the trees in the historical center of the city were assessed at 3.5 million lei. There will be lopped and pruned the trees growing on the section of Stefan cel Mare si Sfant Blvd between the streets Ciuflea and Ion Creanga and on the streets Veronica Micle, Mitropolit Varlaam, Mihail Kogalniceanu, Alexei Shchusev, Armeneasca and Mihai Eminescu.
Alexei Palancean, chief engineer of the Forestry Agency “Moldsilva”, said the people often oppose the planting of poplars owing to the fluff. But the population must know that there will be planted male poplars that do not make fluff.
According to representatives of the Green Areas Association, over 2,000 trees are cut down and about 20,000 new trees are planted each year.
