About 2,000 trees were planted in the Forest-Park on Calea Orheiului St as part of the tree planting campaign launched in Chisinau on October 18. The event involved mayor of Chisinau Ion Ceban, functionaries of the City Hall and volunteers who joined in, IPN reports.
According to the Chisinau City Hall, a number of tree planting events will be staged in the future. It is projected that a total of 100,000 trees will be planted in parks and green areas of Chisinau in the framework of the current campaign.
The campaign is carried out in cooperation with the Forestry Agency “Moldsilva” and other partners that will provide the municipality with about 60 species of trees, such as lime, ash, chestnut, acacia and poplar trees. Incumbent President Igor Dodon, who is running as an independent for a new term in office, took part in the event.
Iuliana Cantaragiu, expert of the National Environmental Center, through a posting on Facebook warned the mayor that it is yet too warm and many of the trees will be killed if they are planted now. “The trees haven’t gone into hibernation yet and the leaves haven’t fallen down. The trees planted now, which already suffer because they are taken away from nurseries, transported and planted in a new environment, will direct their energy to leaves to feed them, not to roots. When the temperatures decline, they will not be ready to survive and will get frozen,” explained the expert.
