Transnistrians want back in USSR, poll

More than two thirds of the residents of Transnistria regret the dismemberment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), shows a poll made public by the Independent Analytical Research Center “New Century”. Thus, 67% of the respondents said that if a referendum on maintaining the USSR was held in the Transnistrian region, they would vote in favor, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting www.regnum.ru. According to the poll, 75.3% of the Transnistrian pensioners regret that the USSR fell apart. This figure among the people aged between 30 and 45 is 61.6%, while among people younger than 30 – 38.5%. More than half of those questioned (58%) said the dismemberment of the USSR at the start of the 1990s could have been avoided, while 27.4% said it could not be avoided for a number of reasons. Over 26% of the respondents consider themselves Soviets. The poll also shows that almost half of Transnistria’s population considers the Soviet policy was one of the most successful. The poll covered 724 persons from 15 settlements of the Transnistrian region. It was carried out by the Independent Analytical Research Center “New Century”. The margin of sampling error is 2%.
