In the Transnistrian region, the hotline for combating human trafficking and illegal migration last year was used by 924 persons, who asked for free expert consultancy. The operators of the service said the figure is by 18% or 139 calls higher than in 2015. More than half of the callers asked for details about the migration policy of countries to which they intended to go to work, IPN reports.
17.2% of the calls were of SOS type and required the immediate intervention of bodies specialized in providing support to victims of trafficking in persons and migrants who were in difficulty abroad.
Labor exploitation was reported in four of the cases. Three of those who asked for support were in Russia, while one in the Transnistrian region.
The hotline 0 800 88888 was most often used by women who asked for assistance for mainly male relatives. The men called to find out information.
The human trafficking hotline in the Transnistrian region was launched ten years ago, on the initiative of the public association “Vzaimodeystvie” (“Interaction”). More than 12,000 persons have benefitted from the service so far. The calls are free and anonymous.
