The civil defense general staff of Transnistria started to implement protection measures against inundations. “All the barrages that are about 40 km in length should be strengthened. A sum of 20 million dollars is needed for the purpose,” the general staff head Victor Nicolaenko said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. According to Nicolaenko, repair works must be started in Grigoriopol district, where this summer’s floods destroyed 150 meters of barrage. “Even an insignificant rise in the level of water can cause floods and inundate the fields and houses,” the Transnistrian official said. The civil defense system of the Transnistrian region is in a critical condition. Most of the employees are of retirement age. Owing to the low salary - less than 100 dollars - very few accept to work in the field. There is practically no system for informing about emergencies and no individual protection methods.
