Chisinau and Tiraspol reached a consensus as regards the mechanism for accepting motor vehicles registered in the Transnistrian region into international traffic. The protocol decision to this effect is to be signed in Bender on April 24, IPN reports.

The Bureau for Reintegration Policies in a press release said a new meeting of the working group for developing road transport and infrastructure was held at the office of the OSCE Mission in Chisinau on April 23. This involved the chief negotiators for the Transnistrian settlement process. The sides reached a consensus concerning the mechanism for accepting Transnistrian motor vehicles into international traffic.

Expert of the independent analytical center “Expert-Grup” Sergiu Gaibu said that by this agreement the Republic of Moldova takes a big step backward as a sovereign state. “We lay a heavy stone in Moldova’s “Transnistrization” and in legalizing the eternal conflict on Moldova’s territory. We are instituting fertile regimes for corruption and tax evasion that will become the burden of the citizens living on the right side of the Nistru,” stated the expert.

Under the proposed mechanism, Moldova will have three motor vehicle registration regimes. The standard mechanism with Moldovan license numbers is the only one from which the citizens from the right bank of the Nistru will benefit. There is also the regime of Transnistrian license numbers with which one can travel freely on the right bank of the Nistru. “The third is a hybrid regime of neutral numbers with which the Transnistrians can travel abroad and which will not include symbols of the Republic of Moldova. But the old registration version wasn’t eliminated,” stated Sergiu Gaibu.

According to him, such projects pose major threats to the fiscal discipline and amounts collected into the budget. The mechanism creates new preconditions for avoiding the vehicle import regime and provides the regime in Tiraspol with new financial resources.
