Transnistrian gas kept in Transgaz pipelines in Romania

The Transnistrian region, which is no longer supplied with gas by Gazprom, has gas for 24 days, according to data presented in Tiraspol at Wednesday's meeting of the so-called Security Council. The gas is stored in pipelines in the Republic of Moldova and Romania, mold-street.com said, quoted by IPN.

The localities situated on the left bank of the Nistru consume an average of 270,000 cubic meters of gas per day, almost 20 times less than the average in December 2024, and currently the Transnistrian region purportedly has a reserve of 13 million cubic meters of methane. At the same time, the secessionist authorities continue to assert that the leadership of the Republic of Moldova is to blame for the situation and that Chisinau's aid proposals are petty and fake.

According to the quoted source, the secretary of state of the Ministry of Energy Constantin Borosan announced that a number of meetings were organized on the platform of the Ministry of Energy, including with enterprises based on the left bank of the Nistru, in order to identify solutions to the gas crisis.

Borosan noted that one of the examples showing that Chisinau really helps the region is the fact that it agreed and made sure that the gas reserves of the Transnistrian region can be stored in the main pipelines of the Republic of Moldova, on the right bank of the Nistru, which are now managed by Vestmoldtransgaz, an enterprise controlled by the Romanian company Transgaz.

"Part of the gas is in the pipelines on the left bank and this has mostly been consumed, but a larger part (quantity) is stored in our pipelines. Moreover, even in the Transgaz pipelines (Romania). For the purpose, cooperation between Vestmoldtrangaz and Tiraspoltransgaz was needed and we also turned to the transmission operators in order to find a solution that would provide time for decision-making," Constantin Borosan said in a TV show.

The official stated that, in fact, a series of proposals to provide help to the region were formulated, but not even answers were received to them.

On December 20, 2024, the possibility of turning the gas purchased by Energocom into electricity at the MGRES Power Plant was discussed in Chisinau. "Energocom sent to the MGRES a draft agreement and the electricity consumption schedules. It was agreed that the MGRES will examine the draft agreement and will come up with proposals on its content in the near future," said the secretary of state.

Constantin Borosan noted that no answer came so far, but the operation of the gas-fired power plant would have provided greater stability and reliability to the electricity system. However, the production of electricity from gas at the MGRES, including for the needs of the left bank, would have avoided the temporary power cuts in the Transnistrian region.

It should be noted that the Kuchurgan Power Plant, which now operates with only one coal-fired block, can produce a maximum of 150 MW, of which 23 MW are needed for its own processes. The difference is partially completed by the energy generated by the Dubăsari Hydroelectric Plant.

At the same time, the data presented by the Transnistrian authorities show that the energy consumption of the population in the region has suddenly increased from 45 MWh in December to 170 MWh in the first days of January 2025 and this led to temporary disconnections of consumers from the power supply.
