In a recent interview, the Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselski said, rejecting the rumors about a possible escalation of the situation in the eastern districts of Moldova, that there will be no war and that not the conflict, but the “peaceful coexistence” between the two banks of the Nistru should be “unfrozen”. According to historian and publicist Gheorghe Cojocaru, it is practically for the first time that the Transnistrian leaders, who usually issued all kinds of bellicose warnings, make such trenchant statements. This shows that the Transnistrian administration realizes that peace is more profitable for their economy.

In an interview for Radio Free Europe, quoted by IPN, Gheorghe Cojocaru said the Transnistrian side realizes that the war or a new clash between the banks of the Nistru would be a catastrophe. “It is evident that the Transition administration realizes that peace is much more advantageous and profitable for the Transnistrian economy, more anchored on the European market than on the Eastern one,” stated the publicist.

According to him, the maintaining and strengthening of this course that is vital for the economy of the Transnistrian region are incompatible with aggressive statements. They also probably take into account the fact that the Moldovan authorities pursue a small-steps policy between the two banks, excluding any allusion to an armed confrontation.

“Peace is indeed a precondition and a decisive condition for being able to go further towards the removal of barriers that hamper the free dialogue and the reintegration of the region from the left side of the Nistru into the unitary body of the Republic of Moldova. The contacts in the “5+2” format of the Transnistrian conflict settlement process have been recently based on this,” stated the historian.

Gheorghe Cojocaru said the big geopolitical interests have their own dynamics and can change depending on particular evident or less evident factories. The European Union, in fact, does not want areas with a destabilizing potential at its borders and encourages peaceful cooperation between conflicting sides. It is worth noting that Vadim Krasnoselski, who is tempted by the Kosovo model, waiting for the Transnistrian enclave to be internationally recognized sooner or later, simultaneously makes effort for the Transnistrian region to become a cooperation bridge, not a confrontation area between the East and the West.
