Transnistria will rest until the client gathers strength

“The mountain gave birth to a mouse” – said Victor Alxnis, one of the oldest Russian political allies of the present administration of the break republic of Transnistria, who cut his ties with Igor Smirnov’s team in 2002. The statement refers to the results of the discussions on the problem of unrecognized republics held at Russia’s State Duma, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent in the region informs, quoting the Bender independent weekly “Novaya Gazeta”. The publication says that formally the Russian politician is right. Firstly, it couldn’t have been otherwise because the present and the previous Dumas are controlled by the Kremlin. Secondly, Transnistria is not considered as a separate problem by the superpowers. It is evident that Georgia slipped out of Russia’s zone of interest: at a recent referendum, 72.5% of the voters said they are in favor of Georgia joining NATO. That’s why, Russia warns the authorities in Tbilisi: if this thing happens, Georgia can bid farewell to Abkhazia and South Ossetia. At the same time, Russia hopes to obtain certain guarantees of neutrality and non-accession to NATO from Moldova, which was weakened by wine sanctions. Therefore, Transnistria was removed and estranged without many ceremonies. “After using us, they let us aside: take a rest until the client gathers strength”... Grigore Maracuta, the special representative of the Transnistrian parliament, bitterly criticized the foreign ministry of the unrecognized republic for its actions. According to him, Transnistria’s bad luck at Russia’s State Duma debates “was due to the foreign ministry and to Valery Litskai, who does nothing. Procedures that lead to the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia were initiated at the hearings as I saw, but Transnistria was advised to continue the talks with Moldova,” he said. “This is the fault of the foreign ministry, which lost to the Moldovan diplomats,” Maracuta stated, adding that Valeri Litskai has not been received anywhere lately.
