Transnistria elects new leader

Yevgeny Shevchuk emerged victorious in the presidential runoff in the Transnistrian region on December 25. The former speaker of the separatist republic's parliament bested incumbent speaker Anatoly Kaminsky. According to preliminary results publishes by the region's election authority, Yevgeny Shevchuk polled 73% and Anatoly Kaminsky 19% of the vote, as 4% voted against both. The final results will be announced within 3 days. Igor Smirnov, Transnistria's leader in the last two decades, was voted out in the first round.
