Moldova’s delegation to the Joint Control Commission (JCC) reiterates its bewilderment at the ongoing preparations for unauthorized military exercises in Transnistria, which could generate new tensions in the Security Zone. In a press release, the Reintegration Office says that a concentration of special military equipment and machinery was detected near the “soldiers’ square” in Ternovca village of Slobozia district on July 31, IPN reports.
According to the JCC, the military observers who were heading for the scene were blocked by the Superior Military Command of the peacekeepers on behalf of Tiraspol. Provisions of the agreements reached by the co-chairpersons of the Commission in July were thus seriously violated. These agreed that the sides will refrain from unilateral actions that can lead to the destabilization of the situation in the Security Zone during the Commission’s vacation.
After the special military equipment and machinery were withdrawn, in two hours the military observers managed to reach the scene, where they found an armored vehicle whose origin is not known. On August 1, the Russian and Transnistrian military bodies blocked the sector were military exercises are to be held without informing the Military Command first.
The Moldovan constitutional authorities describe these acts as provoking and defying, which run counter to the existing peacekeeping mechanism. According to the Reintegration Office, the representatives of Tiraspol show again inability to fulfill the assumed obligations, ignore the main documents of the JCC and block the agreements reached by the co-chairpersons.
