Prime Minister Pavel Filip and UN Secretary General António Guterres discussed the restructuring of the UN peace architecture with emphasis on the prevention of conflicts in a meeting on September 28. The Moldovan Premier approved of the fact that these conflicts, including the Transnistrian one, were put on the UN’s list of priorities in January 2018, IPN reports.

According to the Government’s press service, this June the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution saying the foreign military presence and the imposition of political conditions for fully withdrawing the Russian troops are contrary to the international law and the constitutional neutrality of the Republic of Moldova. A new point was added to the agenda of the current session last week. This is entitled “Withdrawal of the foreign military forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova”.

Pavel Filip said the withdrawal of the military forces from the eastern region of the country will favor the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. “We will appreciate the assistance in concentrating the UN’s attention on the Transnistrian conflict and the withdrawal of the foreign troops so as to prevent conflicts and maintain peace,” he stated.

António Guterres said the UN understands Moldova’s preoccupation with the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country’s territory and will support the efforts made in this direction. He approved of the partnership between the UN and the Republic of Moldova and expressed his gratitude for the support for the reforms initiated within the organization.

At the end of the meeting, Pavel Filip invited the UN Secretary General to visit the Republic of Moldova as part of a visit to the region.
