Ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu, who is the president of honor of the National Unity Party, calls upon the inhabitants of Chisinau municipality to vote the PUN candidate for mayor Constantin Codreanu on May 20. In a news conference at IPN on May 11, Traian Basescu called on the inhabitants of Chisinau not to yield the capital city to the Party of Socialists that is represented by Ion Ceban.

Traian Basescu said the Republic of Moldova has enough “red” at the upper level of the state, referring to President Igor Dodon, who is the former chairman of the PSRM and who suggests joining the Eurasian Customs Union instead of following the path to Romania, the EU and NATO, where Moldova actually belongs. “My call is to show exactly what the voters request of the candidates – responsibility. The yielding of the presidential office and the capital city to the Socialists will generate powerful imbalances for the legislative elections,” he stated.

The ex-President of Romania noted that from political viewpoint, it is essential for a pro-Romania, pro-European candidate to win the elections in Chisinau municipality so that this creates a perspective before the parliamentary elections that will take place in autumn. His call is also addressed to those who want the Republic of Moldova to have the chance of heading for the West after the elections. The voters should think how the Republic of Moldova will look like if Ion Ceban wins the elections in Chisinau.

Traian Basescu urged his voters to be responsible and make a correct choice on May 20. If Maia Sandu had run in the mayoral elections in Chisinau, the PUN would have definitely supported her.

Traian Basescu welcomed the intention of some of the Moldovans from the diaspora to return to Chisinau to vote for the PUN candidate for mayor general of Chisinau municipality and not to allow the Socialists to win the mayoralty.
