President of Romania Traian Basescu said after his arrival from the summit held in Baku that he proposed the GUAM members to create an alternative energy market, meant to transform the region into a “pillar” for the EU, Newsin reports. Basescu said he recommended the members of the organisation to develop field activities which would interest the EU member countries. “All those four members of GUAM are either countries producing energy, or countries which the energy resources pass through, and the organisation could become a pillar for the settlement of EU’s one of the most serious problems, and namely creating an alternative for the energy supply of EU member countries”, Basescu said. The Romanian head of state argued his position by the need for a non-discriminatory and transparent treatment in what concerns the supply of energy and by the fact that this situation would transform the region into an attraction point for the EU. “It is possible to create an energy market in the region of the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, a market which would work within a regulated, transparent and non-discriminatory framework, both in what concerns the sale of energy raw materials, and in what concerns the transit”. Basescu specified that he tackled these issues because during the last three years there are problems which appear constantly, on the territory of Ukraine, on the territory of Belarus or on the territory of EU countries which are not supplied with crude oil, although they have contracts. Another problem discussed by Traian Basescu referred to the frozen conflicts which affect the member countries of GUAM – Moldova, Georgia and Azerbaijan. “The solution for the frozen conflicts can be based only on respecting the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of those three countries affected by this phenomenon”, the Romanian head of state said. Also, Basescu specified during the summit that Romania is interested in becoming a member of this organisation.
