“I want to be honest: Romania will never sign a treaty that will redefine the border between Romania and Moldova. Romania recognized the state borders inherited by Moldova from the former Soviet Union,” said Romanian President Traian Basescu, while in Chisinau on a visit, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Basescu stressed that Romania is ready to sign a treaty that would define the regime of the existent border. “Such a treaty is needed in order to make the regime for crossing the Romanian border by Moldovan citizens compliant with standards that are much more advantageous for them,” he said.
Speaking about the granting of Romanian nationality to Moldovans, Traian Basescu said that the Romanian nationality law that was amended in November 2009 is functional and the the citizenship can be obtained during five months.
Traian Basescu promised that the documents filed before the modification of the law will be processed during six months. The Romanian head of state on January 29 will issue an emergency ordinance to create a special Nationality Agency that will have branches in Iasi, Suceava, Galati, Cluj and Timisoara. The documents could be lodged in any of these towns.
More than 20,000 files for regaining Romanian nationality were processed in 2009. 14,000 Moldovans were granted nationality, while the rest are expecting to schedule an appointment for being sworn in. “The speed at which the documents are processed will grow,” Basescu assured.
Moldova's Acting President Mihai Ghimpu and Romanian President Traian Basescu agreed to sign a partnership agreement on Moldova's integration into the EU as soon as possible. Basescu said that Moldova should hasten the European integration process so as to be included in the group of Western Balkan countries and have the same access to the EU and its financial resources.
