President Igor Dodon signed a decree to withdraw the Moldovan nationality from ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu. In a posting on Facebook, the Head of State says this way he will repair a violation of the law committed by the former President, IPN reports.

Igor Dodon said the commission on nationality and political asylum working under the President of Moldova met today and examined the conditions in which nationality was granted to Traian Basescu.

“Earlier, as a member of Moldova’s Parliament, I said that the nationality was given to Mister Baescu illegally. Traian Basescu repeatedly urged to liquidate the statehood of the Republic of Moldova by annexation to Romania. Since he held the presidency of Romania, he has refused to recognize the Moldovan statehood and the existence of the Moldovan people,” stated Igor Dodon.

According to the President, all the mentioned things run counter to the provisions of the supreme law – the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. “The respect for the Republic of Moldova, for our people, for our century-old history, for our sovereignty and independence will continue to be a major preoccupation while I will exercise the mandate given by the people. Those who will impinge on these values and realities will suffer the consequences imposed by law,” he said.

Under the procedure, following the presidential decree, the Information Resources Center “Registru” is to annul the papers issued to Traian Basescu.
