Romanian president Traian Basescu notes that Romania respects Moldova’s decisions as an independent and sovereign state, but tries „seriously“ not to find reasons leading to freezing relations between the countries, according to Romanian press reports.
According to them, during the last week meeting of the president Vladimir Voronin in Belgium, he showed to be unsatisfied with the fact that Romania didn’t elaborate yet an agreement regarding the borders and relations with RM.
President Traian Basescu said at the conference „European Romania, Atlantic Romania, Romania within international relations“ that RM is a priority of the foreign policy, wishing the integration of this state within the EU enlargement wave including Western Balkans, Romania having nothing to negotiate, at European level, regarding this issue „and only to insist and convince”.
Basescu mentioned that there was a time when the relations between Romania and RM were frozen, and later were resumed. “But I underline that changing the names of the Romanian-French Lyceums into Moldovan-French… I am trying not to find reasons that might worsen the relations ” Romania’s president noted, answering in this way to the request to comment the fact that RM does not show any attitude to get closer to Romania.
According to BBC, Basescu also said that “the Romanian nation can reunite, at least now, within EU. The Transnistrian issue is a difficult one. Unfortunately, either Ukraine, Russia, or RM did not want Romania’s participation in negotiations related to Transnistria”. BBC comments that in this way President Basescu reengaged, on this occasion, in the formula regarding Romania and Moldova as two states having the same people, a formula which is still stressing for the Communist governance from Chisinau.
At the end of May, in an interview for a Moscow magazine , Traian Basescu noted, "sooner or later, Romania will be able to make an acceptable option for all to solve the Transnistrian conflict ". According to the same magazine, Basescu also mentioned that the Romanian plan for solving the Transnistrian problem might be made public if it is examined by politicians of RM and Russia, otherwise "it remains in the drawer".
