The future president of Romania could be a president of the Union, said former Romanian President Traian Băsescu. According to him, the security situation in the region could change and it would be more advantageous for Moldova to unite with Romania so that it automatically becomes a NATO member state. Also, the ex-president of Romania noted that Moldova is appreciated by Brussels, but no one should be under the illusion that the European Union will accept a military conflict zone on its territory, IPN reports.

Romania’s ex-president avoided saying whether it is more advantageous for Moldova to start joint accession negotiations with Ukraine or the two states should be decoupled. He only said that the European Union would never accept military conflict zones on its territory.

“Let’s start the negotiations and then we will see whether the separation from Ukraine is necessary. The gesture made by the European Union last week with the defense and security agreement is a gesture made individually, only for the Republic of Moldova. A gesture that involves funding, not just opportunities for the security of the Republic of Moldova in terms of procurement, border management, communications. Therefore, country-specific measures can also be taken. But no one should hope that the European Union will take over a military conflict zone on its territory. It is excluded. By the treaty,” Traian Băsescu stated in the talk show “In the Context” on the public television channel.

He also said that given the unpredictability of the regional security situation, the scenario of Union with Romania could be more advantageous to Moldova.

“It could happen that the future president of Romania will be a president of the Union, together with the future president of the Republic of Moldova. We’ll see. But it could be that, given that Romania will not be able to intervene on the territory of the Republic of Moldova due to the provisions of the North Atlantic Treaty, at some point, for security reasons, it will be better for the Republic of Moldova to be united with Romania,” noted Traian Băsescu.

This year, both the Moldovan and Romanian citizens will elect their president. The presidential election in Moldova will be held on October 20, while in Romania it will take place on September 15.
