The wife of ex-MP Andrei Bashtovoi died as a result of a gas leakage. After an emergency meeting, Minister of Justice Vladimir Cebotari said that Andrei Bastovoi and his son Valentin, who are in jail, will be freed for 72 hours to take part in the funeral. The other son Mircea is in the hospital in a serious state after being in a coma following the same gas leakage, IPN reports.

According to the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, the police were informed about the incident that happened in a house on Gheorghe Asachi St in Chisinau on January 30. The 26-year-old man was found in a coma in the house and was rushed to Saint Trinity Hospital. The woman aged 59 was found dead.

On a social networking site, the family’s relative Savatie Bashtovoi wrote that Mircea called an ambulance in the morning of January 30. The ambulance team that went to the scene left a note saying that nobody opened the gate when the team was there at 6.50-7.25.

“Mircea made the call to the ambulance service at about 6:30am and he also called a friend of his, but this didn’t answer the phone immediately. As Mircea didn’t answer the phone, several friends of his went to look for him at home. They found the gate closed and the light burning. They jumped over the gate and entered the house, whose doors were usually open. There was an unbearable smell of gas. Svetlana Bashtovoi was dead, while Mircea was in a serious state. They took him out on the balcony and called an ambulance. The ambulance came at about 8pm. Thus, the two smelled that gas for about ten more hours after the first call to the ambulance was made,” wrote Savatie Bashtovoi.

One of the friends who entered the home of the Bashtovoi Family told IPN in the evening of January 31 that Mircea Bashtovoi was better.

Andrei Bashtovoi, who was a member of Moldova’s first Parliament and a signatory of the Declaration of Independence, in 2013 was sentenced to nine years in jail for misappropriation of funds while serving as the vice president of a company. His son Valentin got eight years in the same case.
