The Traffic Police Division will be carrying out the operation “Pedestrian” from August 22 until the end of the month. Traffic police officers will impose fines on the persons who break the traffic rules, especially the pedestrians who jaywalk.
Traffic Police Division press officer Aurelia Mija told Info-Prim Neo that the accidents in which the pedestrians are hurt represent 35.6% of the total number of traffic accidents. Until the end of August, traffic police officers will be present on the main arteries of Chisinau, near shopping centers and other crowded places. The pedestrians who will not respect the street crossing rules will be warned or even fined, depending on the circumstances. The fines vary between 100 and 400 lei.
The over 500 accidents involving pedestrians that happened since the start of 2011 resulted in 68 deaths. The largest number of such accidents occurred in the municipality of Chisinau (57.3%), Orhei (3.1%), Cahul (2.7%), Balti and Hancesti (2.5%). The drivers were to blame in 82% of the cases.
