Tourist activity rose nearly 50% in first half of year

Travel agencies and operators provided tourist services to 142,000 tourists and hikers in January-June 2022, or by 47.8% more compared to January-June 2021, the National Bureau of Statistics reported.

The number of participants in outbound tourism increased by 32,500 people, in receiving tourism by 7,300 people and in domestic tourism by 6,200 people. Outbound and domestic tourism accounted for the largest shares of the total number of tourists and hikers, 67.9% and 24.7%, respectively.

In January-June 2022, travel agencies and tour operators helped 96,500 tourists and excursionists travel abroad, an overwhelming majority for purposes of rest, recreation and leisure (99.6%). The Moldovans’ preferred destinations included Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Egypt, Greece and the United Arab Emirates.

In January-June, 35,100 tourists and excursionists participated in domestic tourism. The movement of Moldovan residents within the country for tourist purposes was organized mainly by travel agencies and tour operators based in Chisinau (69.7%).

The number of foreign citizens who visited the Republic of Moldova through travel agencies in January-June 2022 was 10,400 tourists, most of them being one-day visitors.

Travel agencies and tour operators reported sales totaling 968.5 million lei in January-June 2022, up by 34.9% from the similar period last year.
