The Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure suggests toughening up the penalties for transporting passengers without tickets. Under the amendments proposed by it, the fine for drivers or conductors of interurban routes who do not issue tickets will be 800 to 1,200 lei. The changes will be examined by the Government in this week’s meeting, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the Ministry.

The carriers that will not make sure that the passengers are issued with tickets may be fined 10,000 lei. Besides being fined, the drivers will be deprived of the driver’s license for a period of up to six months.

The Ministry also worked out a plan for combating the illegal transportation of passengers. A mobile team of inspectors are verifying the driver’s documents, including how they respect the passenger transportation norms. This week, about 140 minibus drivers have been fined for conveying passengers without authorization. The mobile inspection teams will work for an indefinite period.

According to estimates, in Chisinau alone about 600-800 passengers travel on the internal routes without tickets daily. An economic-financial analysis showed that damage of over 1 million lei is caused monthly by illegally transporting passengers on these routes.
