A two-year-old boy died last night after falling out a fifth-floor window in Chisinau’s Ciocana district. The child was left in his grandmother’s care and everything happened as the woman went to the bathroom for just a moment.
Chisinau police spokesperson Natalia Stati told IPN the boy’s mother, 23, was at work. The grandmother, who babysat, claims the windows were shut. It’s believed the boy managed to climb onto the windowsill and open the window. He then leaned on the mosquito net and it gave way under his weight.
The boy was still alive when the ambulance arrived, but he couldn’t be saved. A criminal investigation has been started to establish all the circumstances.
Adults are reminded not leave young children unattended when ventilating the room. It is also recommended to tilt the window rather than open it completely. Furniture such as chairs and tables should not be placed near windows to prevent children from climbing onto it and reach the window.
