Tiraspol Union plans to raise $250,000 to erect monument

The Union of Fighters for Transnistria’s Independence intends to collect about $250,000 from donations to build the Monument to the Defenders of the Moldovan Transnistrian Republic (MTR). The monument is to be completed by September 2010, “before the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the MTR,” said the Union’s head Vladimir Buchka, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent in Tiraspol reports. Since the start of this year, people, nongovernmental organizations, political parties and companies have transferred about 400,000 rubles (563,000 lei) to the special bank accounts opened in Tiraspol. A sum of 100,000 rubles (141,000 lei) was allocated from the budget of Tiraspol town. According to the statistical data of the Transnistrian institutions, 804 persons living in the Transnistrian region were killed during the armed conflict of 1992. The monument will be erected at the Glory Memorial Complex in the center of Tiraspol.
