The Transnistrian side gave a formal answer to the request of Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Eugen Carpov to give back the money intended for paying salaries to the teachers of the Tiraspol Lyceum “Lucian Blaga” and the institution’s stamp and vehicle. They were confiscated by the Transnistrian security forces three days ago on accusations of smuggling, IPN reports.

“The response of the Transnistrian authorities is a formal one. They make reference to provisions from certain documents and do not take into account the sensitivity of the subject and its social aspects that refer to the work of the given schools. It is evident that the teachers and the lyceum’s administration have nothing to do with the policy pursued by Tiraspol. Being the most vulnerable and being situated outside the security zone and outside the practical limits for being protected by the Moldovan institutions, they are the easiest target for being pressurized,” Eugen Carpov stated in an interview with Radio Free Europe.

After the February 7 meeting of the chief negotiators for the Transnistrian settlement of Chisinau and Tiraspol, Eugen Carpov and Nina Shtanski, which was held at the office of the OSCE Mission in Tiraspol, Eugen Carpov said the discussions became more difficult and this is not accidental. “We see that besides the discussions we have, the Transnistrian side takes other steps and actions. The conclusions were general in character. At least we agreed that the working groups will continue work and will make effort to identify compromise solutions,” he stated.

The demand of Chisinau remained unchanged – both of the sides must refrain from taking unilateral actions. “From our viewpoint, the dialogue, negotiations, meetings and discussions are the only way by which we can reach compromise solutions to the problems we face. 5+2 is a format designed to help Chisinau and Tiraspol to make progress,” said Eugen Carpov.

The next round of the 5+2 negotiations was scheduled to take place in Vienna on February 27-28.
