Tiraspol announces 50% rise in foreign trade

The Transnistrian region’s foreign trade during the first five months of this year rose to US$821.6 million according to statistics quoted by the local press. This is an increase of 53% compared with the corresponding period last year. Imports grew by 44%, while exports by 72%, IPN reports.

The local customs’ chief  Vitali Neagu, in a meeting with the Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselski, said Transnistria’s exports to the EU amounted to 36% or US$ 105 million. Romania remained the main partner in Europe, being followed by Poland, Germany, and Italy. Exports to Russia in the five months came to US$ 32 million, which is 11% of the total. Among the states of the Eurasian Customs Union, Russia holds the lead by the volume of imports from the Transnistrian region.

Making reference to analysts of the so-called Transnistrian republican bank, the local press reported that at the end of May inflation remained at the level of 4.6%. In May the inflationist process slowed down and this helped maintain the costs for the standard set of products and services at almost the April level (+0.02%).

The food prices witnessed a multidimensional change. By the end of May, the prices of fruit and vegetables rose by 4.7%. In a way that is typical for the end of spring, the fruit and vegetables harvested the previous year grew in price: beetroot by 15,7%, carrot by 7.3%, cabbage by 4.3%, apples by 3.6%. In contrast, the price of potatoes decreased by 2.3% before the new harvest.

Under the influence of the seasonal factor, the products of animal origin decreased in price. The price of cow cheese fell by 8.1%, of sour cream by 6.8%, of pressed cheese by 2.6%. The price of eggs in May continued to decline (minus 17.0%), as on other markets.

As to fuel prices, these remained unchanged in the region, but grew on the markets of the partners states – by 0.8% in Ukraine and by up to 5.6% in Russia.
