The TikTok platform can be closed in the Republic of Moldova if it poses threats to state security, said Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, the leader of the Party of Action and Solidarity. According to him, an unprecedented infusion of propaganda cannot be allowed, IPN reports.
"One way is to have a common voice with the member countries of the European Union, through which very clear rules are set down in relation to all these giant platforms, which exceeded the business dimension. They started to be used to influence democratic, geopolitical processes. These are very strong instruments cynically used by autocracies, such as the one in Russia and other countries, against other countries," Igor Grosu stated in the program "Emphasis on Today" on TVR Moldova channel.
But, according to him, if this method does not work, it will be necessary to intervene through regulations. Asked if the TikTok platform could be shut down, the Speaker said that no option can be ruled out.
"If we see that this represents a danger to the country and all our requests, all our appeals, when someone instigates, urges to violate public order, deliberately uses – when one not accidentally broadcasts a news that is not verified and has a less correct tone, but when something is done deliberately, in an organized, concerted way – a campaign against state security – we are obliged to intervene," said Igor Grosu.
He also added that when it comes to state security, courageous, assumed decisions are needed and these should be explained to the citizens.
