Three types of digital signature with legal power and different protection levels are instituted by a bill that was approved by the Government on December 17.

The unqualified simple and advanced digital signature will be mainly used in the relations between economic entities, while the qualified digital signature will be used in the interaction between the public authorities and for providing electronic services for the population. It will be put in the electronic identity card, IPN reports.

The use of digital signature and electronic identity card is provided in the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU. The bill is to be passed by Parliament.

The period of validity of the certificate with the user’s public key will be set by the provider of certification services, but cannot exceed one year. The bill obliges the service providers to keep the information about the digital signature for at least 15 years.

From March 1, 2014, the Moldovans will be issued with electronic identity cards with the digital signature incorporated.
