If parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, three political parties would enter the legislative body, namely the Party of Action and Solidarity with about 24.1% of the ballot, the Party of Socialists with over 13.4% and the Revival Party/Shor Party, which was declared unconstitutional and dissolved, with almost 8.6%, shows the Public Opinion Barometer (BOP) 2023, which was conducted by the polling company CBS-AXA and presented by the Institute for Public Policy (IPP).

In a news conference hosted by IPN, IPP executive director Arcadie Barbăroșie said that 3.6% of those polled would vote for the Party of Communists. “This would be followed by the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform”, the Social-Democratic Party, the Political Party Our Party, the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova with over 1% of the vote. The rest would poll less than 1%. However, 27.9% of the respondents said that they don’t know. This is a lot,” stated the IPP director.

Arcadie Barbăroșie noted that those surveyed were asked which Moldovan political personality they trust the most, with the question being an open one. Some 19.6% of those polled said they trust President Maia Sandu, while 6.9% mentioned ex-President Igor Dodon. The two politicians are followed by Ilan Shor (3.7%), Vladimir Voronin (2.1%), Ion Ceban (1.7%), Ion Chicu (1.6%), Renato Usatyi (1.2%). Other political figures garnered less than 1%. But 45.4% of those interviewed said that they do not trust anyone, while 13.2% don’t know or didn’t answer.

If a presidential election was held next Sunday, incumbent President Maia Sandu would be voted by 29.4% of those polled. 18.1% of the respondents would vote for Igor Dodon., 5.6% for Ion Ceban, 5.1% for Renato Usatyi, 4.1% for Ion Chicu, 3.2% for Ilan Shor. The rest of the politicians would garner less than 2%. Another 9.6% of those polled said they would not go to the polls or would not vote, while 20.5% don’t know or didn’t answer.

“If a presidential election was held indeed, who would the Central Election Commission allow to run in this election? I think Missis Maia Sandu will definitely be allowed to vote. Ion Ceban, Renato Usatyi, Ion Chicu could also run. As to Igor Dodon, it is a big question here as he is still investigated by the Prosecutor General’s Office. Ilan Shor was convicted. I consider these percentage points will be divided somehow.  Will Maia Sandu manage to win a majority of votes? I believe she will as in this poll we didn’t ask the diaspora how they would vote,” said Arcadie Barbăroșie.

Sociologist Vasile Cantarji, CBS-AXA vice director, noted that the poll was carried out during August 9-23 and covered a sample of 1,215 persons aged 18 and over from the Republic of Moldova. The margin of sampling error is at most +3%.

The research was conducted with financial support from Soros Foundation Moldova.
