A man, 35, was lethally injured by a BMW car driven by a 23-year-old man on Chisinau-Orhei roadway near Stauceni town Saturday evening. 15 minutes later, a car driven by a 38-year-old man ran into the crowd that gathered at the scene of the first accident, killing two more persons and putting two other, including a traffic officer, into hospital, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The driver of the second car fled the scene and dumped his vehicle shortly after entering Chisinau in a bid to dodge the police, but was arrested later that night.
According to Chisinau's acting police chief Jacob Gumenita, the number of traffic accidents in the municipality has soared lately. Over the past week alone there were recorded 20 accidents which claimed 4 lives and injured 23 persons.
At the City Hall's ordinary meeting on Monday, Gumenta argued the main reason was “the inadequate street lighting”, and also the recklessness of the drivers who drive drunk or without a driver's license. At the same time, he blamed pedestrians for the habit of jaywalking.
In retort, Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said the level of street lighting has risen significantly in the last year, while the main reason for the surge in traffic accidents is the layoff of traffic police staff by order of President. Chirtoaca went on to add that the true reason behind that move was to cause disorder in the city and lay the blame on the municipality.
