Three people were detained on Monday morning following searches carried out in two cases of passive corruption and influence peddling. Two are officials of the Local Military Center of ATU Gagauzia and the third person is an intermediary. According to the National Anticorruption Center (NAC), the suspects are investigated for allegedly receiving money from persons who were to be drafted into the armed forces of the Republic of Moldova for freeing them from the obligation to do the military service, IPN reports.
The NAC said that the intermediary purportedly acted jointly with the head of the Human Resources Unit of the Local Military Center of Gagauzia. The latter asserted that he has influence over the head of the Conscription and Mobilization Section, whom he could make take actions contrary to his professional duties. Thus, they allegedly asked and received amounts of up to €1,000 in order not to start the procedure for drafting young people into the National Army or not to hold them accountable for evading military service.
Following the searches carried out by the NAC, the head of the Conscription and Mobilization Section of the Local Military Center of Gagauzia and the head of the Human Resources Section of the same Center, as well as the intermediary were detained for 72 hours.
