Three men aged between 28 and 37 from Calarasi town were arrested by the police in Chisinau on suspicion that they stole license plates of cars registered outside the country. So far the police collected evidence of at least five thefts committed in Calarasi and eight thefts committed in Chisinau, IPN reports.
According to the Chisinau Police Division, one of those arrested worked as a cab driver. His task was to identify cars registered abroad. When questioned by the police, the men communicated details about the thefts and how they obtained money from the vehicle owners. The robbed drivers found a note on the windscreen, which told them how they could recover the plates for 2,000 lei. The owner was to transfer the money to a bank account in Russia and was then informed where the license plate was hidden.
The three are investigated for theft and blackmail. They face seven to ten years in jail.
The drivers who were also robbed of license plates are asked to call the Rascani Police Inspectorate of Chisinau.
